Tragic Scooter Accident Claims Life of Woman in Flushing, Queens

Car accident in Queens

QUEENS, NEW YORK (September 29, 2024) – A tragic accident in Flushing resulted in the death of a 61-year-old woman on a scooter near the intersection of College Point and Blossom Avenue.

According to New York City officials, the collision occurred around 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday when an SUV driver made a left turn directly into the path of the scooter rider. Emergency Medical Services were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they attempted life-saving measures on the victim. Despite their efforts, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after the incident.

This accident highlights a troubling trend involving increased scooter usage alongside a corresponding rise in accidents involving these vehicles. Statistics from the Consumer Product Safety Commission indicate a significant increase in injuries associated with micromobility devices, such as e-scooters. Reports reveal that from 2017 to 2022, there were 233 deaths attributed to micromobility devices, including e-scooters and hoverboards.

All drivers hold a legal obligation to operate their vehicles carefully and to avoid actions that could lead to collisions with pedestrians or other road users, including scooter riders. Under New York Vehicle Code 1146, it is mandated that drivers exercise due care to prevent accidents. A failure to slow down or appropriately navigate around scooter riders can lead to negligence claims against the driver responsible for the incident.
