Two tragic traffic incidents occurred over the weekend in North New Hyde Park and Lake Ronkonkoma, resulting in the deaths of a pedestrian and a young driver, police confirmed.
In North New Hyde Park, a fatal accident took place on Friday afternoon involving a pedestrian. The victim, identified as Diane Russ, 78, of Springfield Gardens, Queens, was walking in the parking lot of a Cumberland Farms gas station situated on New Hyde Park Road. According to Nassau County police, the incident occurred around 2:44 p.m. when Russ fell to the ground and was subsequently struck by a 2019 Nissan, operated by a 49-year-old man. Emergency services were called to the scene, and Russ was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The driver of the vehicle remained at the site of the incident and is cooperating with authorities during the investigation.
Separately, in Lake Ronkonkoma early Saturday morning, a single-car crash claimed the life of a 20-year-old man. Authorities reported that Joseph McKeegan, a resident of Holbrook, was driving a 2007 BMW 335 westbound on Portion Road from the intersection with Ronkonkoma Avenue at approximately 2:36 a.m. McKeegan lost control of the vehicle, which crossed into the eastbound lanes, veered off the road, and collided with a utility pole.
