In a tragic incident on Wednesday, a 16-year-old girl lost her life and her 8-year-old sister sustained critical injuries during a hit-and-run accident in Sunnyside, Queens. The collision occurred on the last day of the school year, in the vicinity of I.S. 125 Thom J. McCann located at 47th Ave. near 46th St. The accident took place at approximately 3:25 p.m. as the young girls were crossing the street.
According to police reports, the driver of a white Ford truck was traveling westbound on 47th Ave. and made a turn onto 46th St. where he struck the sisters, who were using the crosswalk. The driver proceeded to run over the older sister, causing her severe body trauma which led to her death at the scene of the accident. Her younger sibling was left with serious injuries to her head and legs and was immediately taken to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition.
At the time of the accident, there were no crossing guards on duty, which is a notable absence on a day when the school had dismissed students early at 1 p.m. to mark the commencement of summer break.
