In New York, dancehall musician Rygin King, whose legal name is Matthew Smith, has been detained on multiple counts related to illegal firearms possession. Court documents reveal Smith, age 29, is facing charges including second-degree possession of a loaded firearm, third-degree possession of ammunition clips, possession of an ammunition feeding device, and fourth-degree possession of a firearm.
Smith was taken into custody by the New York City Police Department’s 113th Precinct’s special operations team on July 8. Further details regarding the conditions leading to his capture have not been provided. It is reported that Rygin King was among a group of individuals who were all subsequently arrested.
The artist entered a plea of not guilty to the allegations during his arraignment. A preliminary hearing is set for July 12 at the Queens Supreme Criminal Court. Appointed by the court, attorney Marc B. Laykind is providing legal representation for Smith.
Under New York law, the most serious count of possession of a loaded weapon mandates a minimum prison sentence of three and a half years for first-time offenders, potentially extending up to fifteen years.
