In a tragic incident in New York, a Queens woman suffered life-altering injuries after an accident at the Morristown station in New Jersey. The accident occurred as she was attempting to return to New York City following a visit with her family.
30-year-old Lisa Fitzgerald faced a harrowing ordeal on the evening of May 4 when she mistakenly tripped and fell into the perilous gap between the train car and the platform while boarding her train. In a matter of moments, tragedy struck, and Fitzgerald’s leg was severed by the train.
“My leg got cut off immediately once I went down,” Fitzgerald recounted. “It’s kind of a blur that happened really quickly.” Flung around by the moving train, Fitzgerald found herself lying on the tracks, with yet another train fast approaching.
In a desperate effort to avoid further harm, she managed to roll to the edge of the platform. “I flattened myself against the platform,” she explained, “and pulled myself over before throwing myself over the edge to safety.”
Despite her vocal efforts for assistance, help was not immediately forthcoming. Fitzgerald continued to cry for help until an NJ Transit worker noticed her plight and called over a police officer who then summoned backup.
