QUEENS, NY — In a report from the Queens District Attorney’s Office, Melinda Katz stated that Waheed Foster has received a 22-year prison sentence after a violent assault at the Howard Beach-JFK Airport subway station in September 2022. This aggression caused significant trauma to Elizabeth Gomes, a 33-year-old commuter, who suffered the loss of her right eye due to her injuries.
The attack took place on the morning of September 20, 2022, where Foster, unprovoked, attacked Gomes from behind with a hard object as she was exiting a train and heading towards the subway station platform. During the encounter, Foster proceeded to viciously punch and kick Gomes, despite her attempts to escape.
Evidence from surveillance recordings show the relentless nature of the assault, capturing a bystander’s futile attempts to stop Foster, who chased the individual away. Gomes was found severely harmed on the subway floor following the incident.
Quick action was taken to admit Gomes to a nearby hospital where she underwent an emergency operation on her eye. Tragically, despite medical intervention, the injury resulted in permanent loss of vision in her right eye.
