In Queens, New York, an arrest has been made in connection to a lethal hit-and-run accident. Joshua Gutierrez, a 20-year-old resident of Woodhaven, is facing charges of criminally negligent homicide and leaving the scene of an incident without reporting. He is accused of fatally striking 58-year-old Darryl Younger, a city Department of Education employee, in Long Island City.
Darryl Younger was crossing Jackson Ave. at the intersection with 50th Ave. around 4:40 a.m. when he was hit by an SUV, reportedly driven by Gutierrez. At the time of the incident, Younger was on his way to begin his workday as a school lunch loader and handler. Police allege Gutierrez fled the scene driving south on Jackson Ave. and left Younger in the street where he sustained severe head and body injuries.
Emergency medical services responded and transported the victim to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Younger was just blocks away from his workplace at the Education Department’s Office of School Food and Nutrition located on Vernon Blvd. in Long Island City. He was also a resident of Bedford-Stuyvesant.
