DEER PARK, Long Island — A tragic vehicle crash at a nail salon resulted in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to ten others on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. when a driver lost control of his vehicle, crashing into Hawaii Nail & Spa.
According to Suffolk County Police, 64-year-old Steven Schwally was driving a Chevrolet Traverse at a high rate of speed through a parking lot. He crossed a roadway and crashed through the front window of the salon, penetrating nearly the entire length of the establishment.
Emergency responders pronounced four people dead at the scene. The deceased were identified as Jiancai Chen, 37, from Bayside, Queens; Emilia Rennhack, 30, from Deer Park; Yan Xu, 41, and Meizi Zhang, 50, both from Flushing, Queens.
Reports indicate that Rennhack was an off-duty police officer, serving with the NYPD’s 102nd precinct. In a public statement, the NYPD expressed its condolences on social media, acknowledging the loss of Officer Rennhack and asking for the public to keep her family and colleagues in their thoughts.
In addition to the fatalities, ten other individuals were taken to local hospitals for treatment. Among the injured, four suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while five others, including a 12-year-old girl, received medical attention for various injuries.
