In a tragic incident on NYS Route 52 in Jeffersonville, a head-on collision between a school bus carrying Sullivan West students and a minivan resulted in the death of the minivan’s driver. The crash involved a full-sized school bus and a minivan that had veered into the opposing lane. Rescue efforts by the Youngsville and Jeffersonville Fire Departments led to the extraction of the minivan driver, who unfortunately succumbed to his injuries after being airlifted to Westchester Medical Center.
The impact of the collision also affected the passengers, with two preschoolers in the minivan being transported to Callicoon Hospital as a precaution. The school bus driver declined medical treatment, while the bus attendant was assessed at the hospital. Following the accident, one child was treated and released, and another remains under medical care for their injuries.
Kathleen Bressler, superintendent of the Sullivan West School District, noted that the minivan was in the process of bringing two preschoolers to a local program when the crash occurred. Bressler stated, “Our thoughts continue to go out to their families,” expressing the distress the community feels over this incident.
Sullivan County Manager Joshua Potosek expressed his condolences for the loss of life and addressed the ongoing trauma for those who were involved in the crash. Acknowledging the collective shock and sadness, Potosek commended the swift response and capable actions of the first responders.
