Bus Crash Injures 5 Under FDR Drive in NYC

A QM11 bus crash led to firefighters helping to retrieve passengers after the bus crashed into a pillar beneath FDR Drive.

Three passengers were injured while traveling on an MTA bus last Monday afternoon, and police believe the driver of the bus could have lost control because he was quenching his thirst so that he was temporarily distracted leading to this accident. The QM11 bus ran through a barrier and hit the support while in the process of rounding a bend near 34th Street.

Fortunately, there were only three injuries. One was not life threatening but was still considered to be serious, while two other passengers were sent to Bellevue hospital for the treatment of less-serious injuries. The driver got away with only minor injuries when his head struck the windshield.

A passenger from Forest Hills, Elizabeth Lillo, who had been using the bus route regularly for 35 years, was seated three rows behind the driver and reported that she thought he was driving far too fast. When the crash took place, she was talking on her cell phone and was taken by surprise when she was suddenly flung forward and hit her chin on the seat in front.

Bus passenger safety in New York City is of a very high standard, and the MTA is continually upgrading safety to ensure the traveling public can leave their autos at home and travel in safety to work or leisure. Bus upgrades are in the pipeline to replace older buses and there is zero tolerance of mobile phone use and other electronic devices by drivers.

It’s commonsense to assume that eating or drinking behind the wheel of a bus could be dangerous and lives could be at risk if the driver loses control of his or her bus. There are few accidents, whether buses, autos or motorcycles, that do not have someone or something found to be at fault that led to the accident. In this case, the MTA will be looking for answers to this QM11 crash, as not only is it accountable to the passengers, but also their insurer when a driver employed by them causes a crash and one of the buses is seriously damaged.

It hasn’t been revealed yet the nature of the serious injury, but a broken limb or a severe knock to the head could cause financial hardship for the victim, while they either remain in the hospital or stay at home to recover and lose earnings as a result of an accident that was not their fault.
