QUEENS, NY (April 07, 2024) – A vehicle incident in Queens on early Sunday left two pedestrians severely injured and a driver arrested on multiple charges. The collision happened along Steinway Street when a sedan veered off the road and struck the pedestrians and nearby objects before coming to a halt.
According to authorities, the driver, 30-year-old Whitney Walker, lost control of the vehicle around 5 p.m., resulting in injuries to both pedestrians, who were subsequently taken to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment. Additionally, the sedan impacted a local dining area and collided with a parked vehicle.
Following the incident, law enforcement apprehended Walker and charged her with driving while intoxicated (DWI), vehicular assault, reckless endangerment, and criminal mischief.
An investigation determined that the accident could have been avoided, highlighting the ongoing risks that impaired drivers pose to the public. National statistics reveal that impaired driving is responsible for 10 percent of fatal motor vehicle accidents in the United States, making it the second-leading cause of traffic fatalities.
