In an unfortunate incident in Queens, New York, a 16-year-old boy was taken into custody for the assault and robbery of a 68-year-old woman at the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church on April 7. The arrest occurred after a sharp-eyed NYPD detective recognized the young suspect from previous encounters with law enforcement.
The teen, who has an extensive history of nine arrests related to juvenile offenses—mostly robberies—was identified from surveillance footage which captured him wearing the same attire he had on during the commission of the crime. Despite efforts to conceal his identity by blocking his face with a piece of paper when near his home, distinctive clothing and footwear linked him to the assault and subsequent theft.
Following his apprehension on April 11, the youth faced serious charges, including assault, robbery, grand larceny, and criminal possession of stolen property. The court ruled that he be held without bail at his hearing in Queens Criminal Court.
According to police reports, the suspect allegedly approached victim Irene Tahliambouris from behind, violently assaulted her causing her to tumble down the church steps, and then proceeded to steal her purse and vehicle. The attack left the victim with a fractured skull and brain bleeding, resulting in her critical hospitalization.
