On August 12, 2023, in Laurel Hollow, a devastating car crash resulted in the tragic loss of a couple from Syosset, Nassau County has reported. Sotirios Spanos, a 33-year-old man from Syosset, has entered a guilty plea to aggravated vehicular homicide charges following the high-velocity collision that claimed the lives of 37-year-olds Ismenia and Odalis Urena.
The fatal incident occurred after midnight when Spanos, under the influence of alcohol and driving at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour, veered into opposing traffic on Northern Boulevard and collided with the Urenas’ convertible. Prosecutors indicated that upon sentencing in June, Spanos could face a prison term of 7 to 21 years.
Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly commented on the severity of the crime, emphasizing the irreversible damage caused by the defendant’s actions. She noted the Urenas were a promising young couple whose future was cut short, leaving behind two daughters.
Spanos was also found guilty of additional charges, including two counts of second-degree manslaughter, two counts of second-degree assault, and driving while intoxicated. His legal representation has stated that Spanos has consistently expressed remorse and accepted responsibility for his actions.
