Long Island Weekend Tragedy: Three Fatalities, Pedestrians Struck in Multiple Collisions

A series of pedestrian-related accidents occurred on Long Island over the weekend, culminating in three fatalities. On Sunday night in New Cassel, a pedestrian lost their life after being hit by two vehicles on Prospect Avenue near State Street.

The first incident involved a 2015 BMW heading westbound, whose 27-year-old driver hit a man crossing the road around 10:58 p.m. Authorities reported that the driver remained at the scene following the collision. The pedestrian, who has yet to be named, was then hit by another vehicle, which subsequently fled without stopping. The victim sustained severe head and chest injuries and succumbed to these injuries at the hospital, where he was declared deceased.

Earlier that same morning, at approximately 12:13 a.m., another pedestrian was critically injured in Dix Hills. The man, identified as 37-year-old Amilar Velasquez from Huntington Station, was walking on the shoulder of West Hills Road when he was struck by an unknown vehicle that fled the scene. He was later transported to Huntington Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Another incident occurred on Saturday evening in Copiague. A woman attempting to cross Sunrise Highway was struck by a 2019 Chevrolet Traverse. She was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip but was also pronounced dead. Police have yet to release her identity.
