In a tragic incident, a high-speed collision took place in Laurel Hollow, Suffolk, on August 12, 2023, which resulted in the death of a married couple. Sotirios Spanos, a 33-year-old resident of Syosset, has entered a guilty plea to aggravated vehicular homicide and other associated charges.
The accident occurred around 12:30 a.m., when Spanos, while under the influence of alcohol and driving at around twice the legal limit for intoxication, lost control of his vehicle. Spanos was traveling eastbound on Northern Boulevard in a 2023 Acura MDX at a dangerously high rate of speed, according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office.
At the same time, Ismenia and Odalis Ureña, both 37, were westbound in a convertible. Spanos’ vehicle crossed into the opposite lane and collided head-on with the passenger side of the Ureñas’ car, subsequently rolling over it.
Data retrieved from the Acura’s event recorder revealed that Spanos was driving at approximately 100 miles per hour just moments before the crash. He commenced braking 1.5 seconds before the impact, hitting the Ureñas’ vehicle at an estimated 84.5 miles per hour.
