FREEPORT, NY – A 77-year-old woman lost her life in a tragic incident in Freeport on Saturday night after being hit by two vehicles while she was crossing Merrick Road. Nassau County police reported the fatal accident occurred near South Main Street at approximately 8:25 p.m.
The woman, whose identity has not been released by police, was attempting to cross the road when an eastbound 2018 Honda Accord on Merrick Road first hit her. Moments later, she was struck by a 2020 Dodge Durango traveling south on Main Street. The victim sustained severe injuries and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Authorities indicated that both drivers involved in the accident co-operated with the police at the scene and no criminal charges have been established at this time.
Statistics released by law enforcement offices disclose an alarming trend of pedestrian fatalities in the region. The count has reached 14 pedestrian deaths on Long Island roadways to date in 2024. This figure stands in marked contrast to the 28 pedestrian fatalities documented last year over the same period.
Earlier on the same day, an unrelated traffic accident in West Islip resulted in the death of another woman and serious injuries to a second passenger.
