In the early hours of Sunday morning, a severe car accident occurred on Route 48 in Southold, resulting in serious injuries to a driver and two passengers. Southold Town Police reported that the incident caused a complete closure of the highway.
Chief of Southold Town Police, Martin Flatley, provided details on the crash, reporting that a pickup truck veered off the road to the east of Kennys Road around 5:15 a.m., colliding head-on with a tree. The three occupants of the vehicle suffered significant injuries and were confined within the wreckage for approximately half an hour until they were discovered by a motorist who happened upon the crash site.
Flatley noted the absence of skid marks, which suggests the driver did not apply the brakes before leaving the roadway. The ongoing investigation, which includes the assistance of a New York State Police accident reconstruction team, is looking into whether alcohol played a role in the accident. Efforts are underway to obtain a warrant for the driver’s blood alcohol content test.
Authorities have not released the identities of the driver or the passengers, all of whom were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment. Route 48, a crucial artery for travel through most of the North Fork town, was shut down for several hours following the incident but has been reopened since.
