Woman on Long Island Charged with Escaping in Cruiser Post Deadly DWI Accident

In a tragic incident on Long Island, a woman lost her life in a car collision, which was followed by an unusual turn of events involving law enforcement resources. An individual suspected of causing the crash was subsequently arrested after commandeering a police vehicle in an attempt to flee.

The incident, which occurred around 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday in Massapequa, involved a 2023 Kia colliding with a 2022 Nissan Altima. The impact was severe enough to inflict fatal injuries upon the Nissan’s driver and necessitate medical attention for its passenger.

Authorities have identified the deceased as 64-year-old Cynthia Mitchell. After the collision, Mitchell was rushed to the hospital but ultimately succumbed to her injuries. Accompanying her, a 46-year-old female passenger also required hospital treatment, although her injuries were deemed non-critical.

In a twist that compounded the gravity of the collision, the individual allegedly responsible for the accident, 21-year-old Rachel Lodice of Jericho, took unlawful possession of a Public Safety vehicle that had arrived at the scene to assist. The vehicle’s swift deactivation and police collaboration ensured Lodice’s prompt apprehension.

Oyster Bay officials acknowledged the odd circumstances, emphasizing the efficiency of their response to secure the vehicle and assist Nassau County Police in the suspect’s arrest.
