The incidents began on Friday with a deadly encounter in Old Bethpage when a driver, now identified as being under the influence, collided with another vehicle, resulting in the death of an individual from the hamlet. Nassau County police are currently investigating the circumstances of the accident.
The following day, Saturday, witnessed further loss of life when a motorcyclist from Elmont perished in a collision in Garden City. The unfortunate events continued into Sunday, with fatal accidents occurring in Deer Park and on the Robert Moses Causeway in West Islip.
These recent fatalities contribute to a grim tally for Long Island, which has seen a surge in traffic-related deaths, particularly following the pandemic. A study from Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli pinpoints a concerning increase in speeding and impaired driving.
Analysis of 2022’s traffic data from Suffolk and Nassau counties reveals a worrisome record of 162 and 81 deaths respectively. Preliminary figures indicate that in 2024, over 70 individuals have already lost their lives in crashes on Long Island.
