Long Beach DWI Crash Results in Up to 12-Year Sentence for Bellmore Man

Car accident in Long Island

In Mineola, Nassau County, a court sentenced a 29-year-old Bellmore man, Robert O’Brien, to up to 12 years in prison for a drunk-driving incident in Long Beach that resulted in severe injuries to a pedestrian, including the loss of a leg. The crash, which took place in 2021, had extensive legal ramifications, leading to a plea of guilty by O’Brien on charges including aggravated vehicular assault and DWI.

The sentence was handed down after O’Brien admitted his guilt to the charges in December, appearing before Nassau County Judge Teresa Corrigan who oversaw the case involving the grave injury and subsequent distress caused to Steven Strauss, a Long Beach local. Strauss endured more than six months of treatment and rehabilitation due to injuries sustained in the collision. This accident dramatically altered his life, particularly as he and his wife were awaiting the birth of their grandchild when the tragedy occurred.
