New York City is known for many things, but most think of the city as very busy. The streets are filled with people and vehicles, and the traffic is often heavy. When pedestrians and drivers are hastily trying to get to and from their destinations, an accident could ensue. A driver might not notice a person crossing the street, and a fatal accident could result. This makes it especially important for drivers to be constantly attentive and aware of their surroundings.
A tragic truck accident recently occurred in midtown Manhattan. The accident involved a vacuum truck and an on-duty New York Police Department, who was directing traffic at the time of the accident. According to preliminary reports, the 71-year-old officer was struck by the large truck as it was pulling out of a parking spot. This occurred at around 2:30 p.m., and the officer was suspected to be directing traffic at the time of the crash.
Emergency crews arrived to the scene of the accident and the officer was pronounced dead at the scene. The Driver of the truck remained at the scene of the accident and was not charged for any violations at this time. Investigation is ongoing, and once the cause is determined, liabilities could follow if negligence was involved.
Following a fatal truck crash, the loved ones of the deceased could file a wrongful death suit. This could result in compensation being awarded. This monetary award could be used to offset the costs associated with the accident such as funeral expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering.
A fatal accident is often a difficult event for loved ones to deal with. A lengthy investigation often follows the incident, which could increase and lengthen the coping process. Those affected should understand their options so their interests and rights are protected, especially if they are thinking about filing a civil lawsuit.
