A collision last Sunday involving a 5-car pileup resulted in several injuries, one of which was serious. The car accident took place on the Garden State Parkway at the New York Extension, according to New York State Police.
This was a crash typical of a chain-reaction event where a vehicle driven by a driver named Tracy Walsh of Sommerville, Massachusetts, was unable to come to a stop when traffic had slowed down.
Walsh’s car struck the rear end of the second vehicle in front of her, and that vehicle slammed into the third vehicle, and this was subsequently pushed into the fourth. Walsh sustained chest and head injuries and was sent for treatment at Nyack Hospital. 27-year-old David Olson and 28-year-old Sidney Hamilton, passengers in Walsh’s vehicle, both sustained back and head injuries and received treatment at Nyack Hospital.
Peyman Samimi, age 46, from Chestnut Ridge, New York, the driver of the second vehicle, sustained spinal injuries that were serious and is now under hospital care at Nyack Hospital.
The driver of the third vehicle, John Zoppi, age 52, was taken to the Good Samaritan Hospital with leg pain, while Gary Puzliese and Marc Zoppi were also transported to the Good Samaritan Hospital suffering from pains in their backs.
The drivers of the third and fourth vehicles further down the chain reaction fortunately were not injured.

At this point it is not clear whether speed was a factor in causing this accident as the injuries sustained by the drivers and passengers of the second and third vehicles were quite serious with back, head and spinal injuries being reported. All those injured were sent to the hospital and it may be some time before they are able to return to normal life.
Spinal injuries can be particularly serious involving long recovery times and even time in a wheelchair while healing and rehabilitation takes place. A head injury at first may not seem too serious but some brain injuries like traumatic brain injuries take some time to reveal themselves and not only will the victim be in pain but memory loss may take place too.
All those injured were most likely to be income earners and any time in hospital will deny them of their income-earning potential, which will make it difficult to pay hospital bills and meet the needs of the family.
Fortunately in New York it is possible for victims of serious accidents that were not their fault to file a personal injury compensation claim against the person found to be responsible for the accident and injuries, as long as the injury is serious enough. In this case the cause of the accident hasn’t yet been confirmed, but when it is, victims will be asking questions and looking for ways to pay for hospital bills and recovery times.
