Treats Accident Victim Who Lost His Nose in Mount Sinai Eye and Ear Infirmary

A recent newspaper report has indicated how serious and life changing a severe injury from an accident can be when a 14-year-old boy, Dallen Jennet, was admitted for treatment at an NYC hospital for serious facial injuries.

The boy, who originates from the Marshall Islands, accidentally came into contact with transmission lines while climbing a tree near his home. The results were injuries to the facial tissue that caused the loss of his nose. The injuries were so devastating that the teenager turned into a recluse, not wanting face-to-face contact with anyone except his close family. He gave up school and turned down offers to be with friends due to the sheer embarrassment of the facial disfigurement.

Fortunately for the boy, a doctor called Dr. Tal Dagan was on a visit to the community and decided to take action and get something done about the boy’s disfigurement. It took some time for the doctor to get Dallen to turn his head and the shock for the doctor of seeing just a hole where the nose used to be and the face with a deep crevice running through it shook him into action. The boy also suffered from cataracts and had lost a number of toes when the electrical burning took place.

The doctor quickly arranged to get Dallen transferred to the Ronald McDonald house in New York where he would stay while the treatment was being organized. Dr Dagan used the latest in 3D technology and created a perfect 3D transplanted nose created by layers of cartilage provided by the hospital at no cost. First, he had to perform a number of grafts from tissue taken from other parts of the boy’s body to fill in the facial depressions. Grafts and transplants are never that easy. To look and remain healthy, the doctor had to ensure they were being fed with sufficient blood.

After three procedures and substantial recovery time, Dallen was able to go home. He not only returned to school, but now has a girlfriend too. This is a success story, no doubt, but it is also a reminder of what devastation an accident can inflict on its victim and how it can bring about a life of utter misery to the victim.

When we read a news report stating that a vulnerable road user – such as a motorcyclist, cyclist or pedestrian – has been seriously injured in New York, we never stop to think how devastating that can be both for the victim and his or her family. Fortunately, in New York, a person who is seriously injured in an accident that was not his or her fault may be entitled to file a personal injury claim or lawsuit against the person who caused the accident. This financial compensation means that the victim can get the best medical treatment possible so that his or her future life can return to as normal as is practically possible.

If a victim fails to file a personal injury compensation claim, then he or she and the family will likely be scrimping and saving for years to come to find the money for medical treatment.
