Our pedestrian accident lawyers in New York report that speeding is a key reason for crash fatalities on NY highways.

A recent traffic fatality map has just been created by New York City’s Max Galka, who is a data scientist. It covers the whole of the U.S. from 2004 to 2013.

This map allows you to discover what street in your region is dangerous, which road needs improvements to offer better safety for cyclists and which street experiences accidents caused by drunk drivers.

The data used for this project came from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).

When you zoom out, the map looks like a population map, showing its density throughout the country and mapping of highways, too. The important thing about the map is that when you zoom in more closely to your own local area, like for example Long Island, you will see where pedestrians are most likely at risk of being killed. It also shows information about victims, such as what factors in the area are most likely to result in an accident such as drunk driving and speeding.

There are some cities that do offer to the public more detailed information about crashes, but Galka’s map goes a step further in providing in a user-friendly form the alarming incidence of fatalities caused by traffic accidents on our streets. You simply enter your street’s name in the search bar and the required information then appears.

When Galka was studying the data he found that 58% of fatalities were caused by speeding, alcohol, or driver distractions, and he found to his surprise how dangerous speeding really is.

If you are a pedestrian, a cyclist or another vehicle driver, and a speeding or alcohol-impaired driver crashes into you causing serious injury, he or she will have to answer to the injury that has been inflicted on you, the victim. Fortunately, in New York if you are injured in a crash and it’s not your fault, you may be entitled to file a compensation claim against the person who caused your injury. If you are financially disadvantaged due to your injury, such as the loss of income and hospital expenses, these costs could be part of your personal injury compensation claim.

Often success in such claims depends upon hiring an experienced New York accident attorney like Richard S. Jaffe Esq. who fights to ensure that justice is done.
