Our New York medical malpractice lawyers report that malpractice claims at New York city hospitals have increased in 2015.

A report released recently revealed that claims related to medical malpractice have risen in hospitals throughout New York when compared to 2013.

The 11 flagship hospitals in New York City have seen an increase in medical malpractice claims from 495 in 2013 to 521 in 2015. Every hospital that took part in the survey belonged to the Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC), which is in charge of all public clinics and hospitals in New York City. The HHC is the biggest municipal healthcare provider in the U.S. and it serves 1.4 million patients.

According to a Patient Safety America report in 2014, malpractice in the medical field accounted for 400,000 deaths in U.S. hospitals.

Medical malpractice is unjustifiable considering the amount of money that goes into training medical professionals in all aspects of medical care. When any member of the public visits a medical center or is admitted to see a doctor, he or she expects to come out in better health than when entering the facility. It seems for some of us at least this is not the case, and there are many people who do not survive a visit to a hospital or medical center.

There are specific reasons why a fatality takes place, including prescription errors, mixing drugs, wrong diagnosis, poor monitoring of patient care before and after surgery and mishandling of surgical procedures. When this happens, relatives are at a loss as to what to do as they never expect a loved one to die in the hands of medical professionals.

Once the grief has been reconciled then answers are sought and explanations are demanded, but often hospitals and other medical facilities will cover up mistakes made by their staff. This means the evidence needed to determine the reason for a fatality or serious injury is difficult to obtain.

As soon as fault has been established, then it is a question of calculating the financial loss that you or your relative is experiencing as a result of medical malpractice. Sometimes a person is severely disabled due to mistakes made by a doctor, so the financial loss to the family is great and they may not have only lost a valuable income earner, and may have to provide 24-hour care too. An experienced medical malpractice attorney will be able to calculate your financial loss and expenses incurred as a result of someone else’s medical mistakes. If you have lost a loved one, you may be able to file a wrongful death against the medical practitioner who caused the death.

If you believe that one of your relatives has been mistreated in a medical facility in New York or has even lost his or her life, then you need to contact an experienced medical malpractice attorney like Richard S. Jaffe Esq. who will determine if you have a case to file a personal injury or wrongful death claim against the person or medical facility that allegedly caused the injury or death.
