Not long ago in Queens, a young pedestrian was hit and killed by a New York City police department squad car. According to reports, police were responding to a late night “priority emergency 911 call” when they struck the young man as he was crossing the street on foot. The young man died at the scene. Both the lights and sirens of the squad car were reportedly on when the man was struck.

It is hard to imagine what the family of the accident victim is going through. It may be difficult to think about next steps during the grieving process; however, anyone who has experienced the untimely loss of a family member due to the negligence of another may benefit from consulting with a Nassau County wrongful death attorney.

Emergency responders and police officers are vital to our communities and play a crucial role in responding to calls for help. Most of us at some point have moved over when the flashing lights and sirens of an emergency vehicle, squad car or both are en route. During such a time, it is important for all drivers, including the operators of the emergency vehicles, to be aware of their surroundings, exercise caution and not cause harm to another.

All drivers on the road have a legal duty to exercise care and consider the safety of others while driving. Even though squad cars and emergency vehicles, in the course of duty can exceed speed limits and go through intersections, they must consider the safety of others on the road.

A lost life cannot be brought back but the next of kin of the victim may be able to recover compensation for funeral and burial cost, loss of consortium, companionship, support, punitive damages and more.
