What is Valsartan Used for?
Valsartan is a medication that is prescribed to treat high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. Valsartan causes blood vessels to relax, increasing the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart and lowering blood pressure.
It is part of a class of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARB).
After receiving FDA approval for the drug in 1996, Novartis originally manufactured valsartan medication under the brand name Diovan.
Since the drug’s patent expired in 2012, a number of manufacturers have marketed many generic versions of valsartan blood pressure medication in a range of dosages.

FDA Recalls Valsartan
In 2018, Prinston Pharmaceuticals Inc., a subsidiary of the Chinese company Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceutical Co, contacted the FDA about its blood pressure medication. Prinston said that the company had stopped making valsartan products because Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceutical Co. had detected an impurity in the valsartan active pharmaceutical ingredient.
Since then, the FDA has announced voluntary recalls of hundreds of generic valsartan products from numerous drug manufacturers due to the finding that valsartan contained unacceptable limits of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a potentially cancer-causing impurity.
Not all valsartan products have been recalled. The brand name medication Diovan has not been recalled, for example.
An investigation by the FDA found that the contaminant may be generated in the manufacturing process when certain chemicals are present or good manufacturing processes are not followed. The FDA has traced the source of the contaminated drugs to Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceutical Co. and Hetero Labs Limited in India.
The FDA maintains a searchable list of drug companies that have recalled valsartan products.
They include A-S Medication Solutions, LLC, Aurobindo Pharma USA, Inc., AvKare, Inc., Bryant Ranch Prepack, Inc., Hetero Labs, Inc. labeled as Camber Pharmaceuticals, Mylan Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Northwind Pharmaceuticals, NuCare Pharmaceuticals Inc., Preferred Pharmaceuticals labeled as Solco Healthcare, Remedy Repack Inc., Rising Pharmaceuticals Inc., labeled as Acetris Health, Solco Healthcare LLC, Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc., and Torrent Pharmaceuticals Limited.
The list is searchable by manufacturer, type of medicine, lot number, National Drug Code and expiration date.
Understanding Valsartan Lawsuits
More than a hundred lawsuits have been filed by individuals who were prescribed generic valsartan, alleging that the medications contained carcinogens that caused personal injuries such as development of cancer and lead to economic losses.
Some of the manufacturers and suppliers being sued are located in China and India.
The individual lawsuits involving valsartan cancer claims and NDMA contamination have been consolidated as a multi-district litigation in federal court for more efficient handling of the cases during the pre-trial phase.
The plaintiffs in the case are grouped into several categories:
- people who have developed cancer after consuming valsartan
- individuals nationwide who were prescribed contaminated generic valsartan and are receiving medical monitoring
- individuals who purchased contaminated valsartan drugs since 2012.
The U. S. District Court in New Jersey has been designated to oversee the valsartan N-NDMA contamination products liability litigation.
