What is Belviq (lorcaserin) and what is its intended purpose?
Belviq is a prescription weight loss medication that works by increasing the feeling of fullness so that the user eats less food. It comes as a tablet and also comes in an extended-release version, Belviq XR. The drug also is known by the generic name lorcaserin.
Belviq has been on the market since 2012. When the drug was approved, government regulators required that the manufacturer conduct a long-term, follow-up drug safety trial of Belviq. The trial was conducted between January 2014 and June 2018 in the United States and other countries

FDA Recalls Belviq
In January 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that it was analyzing the results of the Belviq drug safety trial that was conducted over five years and included 12,000 men and women.
The results of the study showed an increased risk of cancer among patients taking Belviq as compared to patients taking a placebo.
Following its review of the study results, the FDA requested that the manufacturer of Belviq (lorcaserin HCI) and Belviq XR voluntarily withdraw the weight-loss drug from the market because of safety concerns.
On Feb. 13, Eisai Inc., the manufacturer of Belviq and Belviq XR announced its decision to voluntarily withdraw the drug from the U.S. market.

Types of Cancer Caused by Prescription Belviq
The data showed an increased occurrence of cancer among patients taking Belviq and Belviq XR. A range of types of cancer was reported in the study, with increases in several different types of cancer among Belviq patients including pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer, and lung cancer. The increase in cancer became more pronounced based on the length of time that patients took lorcaserin.
The results prompted the FDA to conclude that the risks of taking the medication outweighed the benefits.
The FDA said that health care providers should stop prescribing and dispensing lorcaserin and patients should stop taking the medication and talk to their doctors about alternate methods to manage weight.
Can You Sue the Maker of Belviq?
If you have been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer or lung cancer after regularly taking Belviq or Belviq XR, you may have a right to file a Belviq lawsuit and seek compensation from the maker of Belviq.
Pharmaceutical companies have a legal responsibility to make and market drugs that are effective and safe when used as prescribed. When drug manufacturers put on the market drugs that have harmful side effects such as increased cancer risk, they should be held fully accountable for the harm caused by the drugs.
It’s unlikely that the doctor who made your cancer diagnosis identified a specific medication as the cause of your cancer. Understandably, oncologists are primarily focused on treating cancer and developing cancer management plans for patients.
But if you were prescribed Belviq or Belviq XR to help you lose weight and you have been diagnosed with cancer, you should talk with a knowledgeable attorney about whether you can sue the manufacturer of Belviq.
A Belviq lawsuit or Belviq cancer claim may demand compensation for:
- Present and future medical costs
- Lost income
- Pain and suffering
- Permanent disability
- Wrongful death
Drugmakers should not profit from selling dangerous or defective drugs that pose greater risks of harmful side effects than benefits.
